Cockshut Hill School

TRITON™ Canopy 105000mm (w) x 3000mm (d)

Cockshut Hill School is a highly successful secondary school located in the historic Yardley area of Birmingham. As a member of the Ninestiles Teaching Schools group, Cockshut Hill is part of a group of primary, secondary and 6th Form colleges which actively promote excellence from both staff and students. With its core values of celebrating diversity, encouraging curiosity and fostering ambition, Cockshut Hill demonstrates the highest standards of teaching and learning.

Due to a large campus, the school determined that there was an urgent need to provide an all-weather, covered walkway to connect the two main school blocks. Streetspace’s expert in-house design team outlined and presented a purpose-built solution, utilising 3D CAD on-site survey technology, to provide a visually appealing, weather-protected walkway to enable safe and easy pedestrian passage. An additional consideration was that due to the sloping nature of the site water would run downhill and freeze in the winter months, presenting a serious slip hazard which had led to closures in the past.

Streetspace put forward a range of options to help overcome these issues, including a TRITON™ radius roof design that included full galvanised steel guttering for the best rainwater management solution. We also ensured that there was adequate protection from the elements across the most exposed areas of the playground, with a flexible base plate to accommodate variation in ground levels and acrylic side panels once the structure was in place.

Streetspace took the time to understand the unique circumstances and conditions facing our client. Hence our designs not only included all ground and surfacing works for the existing areas of soft landscape but also handling planning permissions as well. To eliminate any disruption to the school’s day to day operation we successfully carried all work during the Spring half term period.

The result is a safe, protected pedestrian passage between sites for staff and pupils which eliminates a problematic winter weather slip hazard that has led to the loss of valuable learning days in the past.
