Maximum cover and weather protection for a school courtyard with a stunning fabric canopy

“The issue we were experiencing at St. Peters was the lack of shelter for pupils in our outside recreational areas. The design and construction team from Streetspace showed me various options and talked through any concerns I had. We now have a space where large numbers of pupils can shelter in adverse weather conditions”

THE CHALLENGE – Design and install an outdoor shelter for a school courtyard with an unusual shape

St Peter’s Roman Catholic High School were eager to find a way to expand their outdoor capacity and create a place where pupils could congregate outside, protected from the weather.

A courtyard in between buildings was the perfect place, but its unusual shape and difficult access meant that finding a covered solution was difficult.

We were experiencing a lack of shelter for pupils in our outside recreational areas,” says Chris Sharples, Site Manager at St. Peter’s. “My main concern was working around the unusual shape and quite inaccessible space we were looking to cover.”

So the school turned to Streetspace – specialists in canopies for education institutions – to see what we could offer.

THE SOLUTION – A large tensile fabric canopy with a huge open space underneath – to cover the entire courtyard

Our Streetspace design team met with St. Peter’s staff to discuss their requirements and priorities. The school wanted to use as much of the courtyard space as possible with a covered shelter, and needed a quick turnaround to be ready for the new school year.

We presented the school with two bespoke options for their new shelter, and they opted for the large ORION™ Barrelvault Tensile Membrane Canopy. The Barrelvault was a brilliant choice, as it’s a spacious, stylish school canopy that blends perfectly with the current school buildings.

It even allows natural light to diffuse through to the courtyard below – and most importantly – it gives students and staff maximum protection from inclement weather with the spacious covering. A brilliant social space, rain or shine.

We added green steel columns to blend in beautifully with St. Peter’s school theme, cleverly engineered to sit at the edges of the courtyard and provide maximum, column-free space underneath.

THE RESULTS – The complete transformation of a previously under-used courtyard area into a sheltered outdoor space for all school pupils

Despite the odd rhomboid shape of the courtyard and the difficult, side-gate accessibility, the installation of a unique fabric canopy to cover the whole of the school courtyard was no trouble at all for the Streetspace team.

The extra-large, lightweight canopy is perfect for schools like St. Peter’s – installed to the exact space requirements and creating a superb, open, airy and bright space underneath.

Offering great protection from bad weather, it gives pupils a fantastic place to gather at breaks and lunchtimes. And it’s been incredibly popular already:

“Both staff and pupils love the design and the practicality of the canopy, we now have a space where large numbers of pupils can shelter in adverse weather conditions. Our design brief and additional needs were met 100%.”
