Sports pitch led drive to fresh view of school

An innovative head teacher used the installation of an all-weather sports pitch to help change attitudes towards the school.

Revoe Learning Academy in Blackpool was in Special Measures back in 2013 leading to Head Teacher Dayle Harrison being appointed. To help galvanise the school and create a positive focus he decided to create a covered all-weather sports area. This catalyst for change engaged pupils, transformed opinions of the school and provided a positive focal point for the wider community.

Although a steel-clad barn was originally the plan for the academy, after speaking with the design team at Streetspace, CreativeSparc Architects opted for a more practical and attractive solution – the Sportspace365™ tensile membrane all-weather sports canopy, which comes with a 25-year warranty as standard.

Tensile membrane canopies are a great alternative to traditional-built sports halls because of the lower cost but with no compromise in quality.

Ideal for schools and multi-use games area, the Sportspace365™ canopy provides the perfect cover with shading on hot, sunny days and a waterproof area to continue sports and activities during wet weather. The canopy provides a large bright and airy space free from obstructive columns enabling it to be used for a wide variety of social events and learning opportunities.

At Revoe Learning Academy synthetic turf was installed across the pitch and fabric mesh fencing fitted around the perimeter. This stops balls from escaping the enclosure and provides effective protection from wind.

The project was commissioned with the knowledge that outdoor unheated covered sports areas are healthier for users while being cheaper to run than traditional indoor sports courts, and still suitable for most sports and recreational areas.

Popular with pupils and the local community, it is helping the school’s leadership to change attitudes and raise aspiration. As well as a wide variety of sports, the cover and flexibility of the space means it is also used for drama performances, outdoor learning, and assemblies. The community also has access for evening and weekend events, including sports, activities and one-off events like summer fairs and Christmas markets.

In February 2019, the dedication of Mr Harrison and his team at Revoe Learning Academy was recognised when the school was rated as Good by Ofsted.
